fold / 2018
The set is simple: two chairs and a table. The movement is often simple: fingers tapping on a table, hands entwining, standing up, sitting down. The mood is more complex. fold has continually surprised and intrigued audiences with its approach to the male/female duet form. Much of the movement vacillates between aggression and tenderness, with both qualities displayed equally across gender. Roles continue to shift throughout: aspects of villain and victim appear equally in each performer. Time is suspended, breath is held, as the entire room, performers and viewers alike, navigate and negotiate the intense complexity of human relationships.
cradled in the arms of myself (with you) / 2021
Created just as the world began to crack open in early 2021, cradled in the arms of myself (with you) traces the independence and interdependence of two partners facing a crossroads in life and love. The piece pulls directly from the performers' personal relationship, as a couple that was forced into a very small space together - with a mountain of personal, professional and relational stressors to contend with - during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the work, the pair orbits one another, inextricably bound by an invisible tether, and yet wholly immersed in their own independent experience. Through fleeting moments of connection, the dancers recognize a love that underlies ongoing loneliness and a foundation that offers stability during a time of unimaginable uncertainty. The climax of the work comes as the partners finally hold extended eye contact and join in tender and unending touch, as if to say, "okay, I don't know what comes next, but in this moment, I have myself, and I have you, and that is enough." With this, cradled offers catharsis to an audience that has experienced unprecedented loneliness, while depicting timeless and ubiquitous nuances of intimate relationships.
1 plus 1 makes 3 / 2024
Currently in process (expected premier: fall 2024), 1 plus 1 makes 3 traces the experience of early parenthood and the dynamics of two-becoming-three. Embodying the joy and wonder - and the challenge and exhaustion - of life with a newborn, 1 plus 1 makes 3 is an honest and real-time reflection of shifting identities, juggling hormones, and changing a lot of diapers.
